FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Frequently Asked Questions

How long have you been in the business?

In 2010, we started Weatherization Plus using an old Chevy pick-up truck and a rusty old horse trailer with an insulation blowing machine in the back. They were working with the federal Weatherization Assistance Program for low-income families and individuals. By 2017, they had outgrown the original location and moved to a location with a 12,000 square foot warehouse, added 24 employees, 8 box trucks, 4 pick-up trucks and 1 support vehicle. Weatherization Plus is proud to have provided services for thousands of Central Kentucky homeowners.

Do I need air sealing?

Yes. Insulation is not nearly as effective without air sealing. If air can flow through the insulation, then the insulation is acting more like a giant filter instead of actually insulating your home.

I don’t know anything about insulation. Can you help me choose the right type for my attic?

We don’t expect our customers to be insulation experts. That’s where we come in. We offer several different types of insulation from batt insulation to cellulose, fiberglass to spray foam and more. We can give you the information you’ll need to make the right selection and we can steer you away from certain products that won’t help you meet your home comfort goals. Not all insulation is created equal and some products aren’t recommended in certain applications. Rest assured, our well-trained technicians can help you make the right insulation decision.

Do you offer floor insulation?

Yes. Whether you have a crawl space or an unfinished basement, we can install floor insulation that will help meet your home comfort goals. We have several products that work well in floor cavities and with various budgets. The area to be insulated should be air sealed first to maximize the insulation benefits. We can provide that service as well.

Do you offer financing?

Yes, Weatherization Plus does offer financing. With about a 10-minute conversation with our financing company, you can be approved for one of several different financing options. The process is simple and fairly quick.

Do you work on mobile homes?

Yes. Mobile homes can have some issues that are unique to that style home and therefore require someone who is knowledgeable about that particular style home. Weatherization Plus are experts when it comes to making mobile homes more comfortable.

I own apartment buildings and townhouses that are in need of insulation and general weatherization. Can Weatherization Plus help me?

Absolutely. We specialize in insulation and weatherization for all types of structures, including apartment complexes and townhouses. Although apartments require special handling, we are prepared and trained in evaluating such structures for both insulation and weatherization. The same is true of townhouse communities.

I’m building a pole barn which will include a living space/office space and a workshop. I need help making sure it is properly insulated. Can you help?

Yes. If you have blueprints, we can use those to prepare an estimate for you. We can also provide air sealing services during the construction process to help reduce drafts in the areas that will be used for living quarters and workshops. Keep in mind that air sealing should be done before the insulation is installed. Since we offer a variety of insulation products including spray foam, loose cellulose, fiberglass, batt insulation and graphite-infused insulation board, we can work within your budget taking into consideration your comfort goals. We can even dense-pack cavities using either cellulose or fiberglass insulation. Furthermore, we can seal plumbing and electrical penetrations before installing drywall to help prevent draftiness.

Do you offer infrared imaging?

Yes. While this invaluable tool allows us to identify areas with anomalies, further inspection is needed to determine the specific source and issue. Infrared cameras cannot see through walls. They detect surface temperature differences between materials and these differences help us determine what’s really going on. One important thing to remember is that a trained person needs to conduct the infrared imaging portion of the inspection so the images can be properly interpreted. All of our technicians have been certified by the manufacturer’s infrared imaging trainers. Remember too that further inspection is needed to determine exactly what the problem is and what’s going on. And finally, infrared imaging works best when there is a more dramatic temperature difference between the outside temperatures and the temperatures inside your house.

My house is currently under construction and so I don’t have any insulation at all. Can your company give me an estimate and help me decide what kind of insulation would work for me?

We have many customers who are in the process of building a home. We can review your blueprints with you and give you an estimate. We can also help you decide what kind, or kinds, of insulation would be best for you. If your home is in the framing stage, we can still visit the job site and meet with you on location to talk about insulating your home. Don’t forget, air sealing is the most important step before insulation. We can give you an estimate for that as well.

My house needs a lot of work to make it more comfortable. Both the attic and the crawl space have issues needing to be addressed. How do I determine what to do first?

Weatherization Plus technicians can help you make that determination. Since we understand how homes work as a whole system, we can direct you in making these decisions. You can think of our process like building a staircase. You have to start at the bottom and add each step in order. Because we understand building science and can explain it to you in a way that you can understand. We also don’t want to do something now that we will have to un-do later. Once we have conducted an assessment for you, we can break the estimate out into steps so you can make an educated decision moving forward.

What can I do to help lower my utility bills?

High utility bills indicate excessive air leakage in your home. The best way to combat this is to have one of our qualified technicians come out to assess your home. We use special equipment and our knowledge of houses as whole systems, to locate problem areas in your home and identify the underlying causes of energy loss. We then prepare a plan of action and estimate to complete the recommended work. Don’t be fooled by insulation companies who want you to believe that simply adding more insulation will solve your problem. Weatherization Plus takes a comprehensive approach to get you the best results.

My utility company did an energy evaluation at my home and gave me a list of recommendations. In order for me to get a rebate from them, I have to have this work done. Is this something you can do for me?

Yes. We have reviewed energy evaluation reports from several utility companies in our service area and have found that nearly everything on those reports are items we can complete for you. Once we have checked off the items on your list, you can proceed with contacting your utility company for your rebate. We can even provide you with an insulation certificate if needed.

What’s the best insulation to put in a crawl space joist?

This is a tough question to answer without looking at the specific job site or house and without knowing the budget. We have to consider these factors and evaluate the moisture levels in the crawl space, allergies for those living in the home, and the general overall condition of the crawl space. For these reasons, we like to visit the site and speak with each individual homeowner.

What’s better for home insulation – closed or open cell foam?

Determining what type of spray foam to use depends on a number of factors including the area to be sprayed, the appliances or mechanics located in the area, the age of the home, the allergies of those living in the home and others. For these reasons, we require a specially trained technician to visit the job site and conduct a thorough evaluation and speak to the homeowner.
