The Health Craze: Is Your House Healthy?

With the warm temperatures more and more people are moving toward outside activities, physical fitness and healthy eating. Maybe you’re hitting the gym, pounding the pavement, riding your bicycle, playing softball and generally staying active and getting fit. You’re eating better and using your grill a lot more! 

Have you ever thought about the health of your house? What? You don’t know what I’m talking about? Well, let me explain, after all, our company goes into homes every day and finds issues that could negatively affect your health.

Houses are built to protect us from the elements. And here in Central Kentucky, those elements can be extreme. However, most houses are not built to protect us from dust, allergens, mold and other air-borne pollutants. Gaps around plumbing pipes and electrical wires allow these pollutants to get into our homes. Framing that wasn’t caulked at the base before the drywall was installed also creates gaps for pollutants to travel through. Walls that aren’t sealed above the ceiling (where we can’t see them) allow air and air-borne particulates (think dust, pollen, mold spores) to actually travel up and down inside our walls!

Attics and crawl spaces and basements…oh my! What do we see in these areas? We see the same gaps and cracks and uncaulked components. BUT….hold onto your horses now folks, we see rodent droppings and highly visible evidence of contamination from dust, dirt, and mold that is actually being sucked into the ductwork and transported throughout the air in your house. YIKES!!! This makes for a house that isn’t healthy.
