Problem House Assemblies: Fiberglass Batt Insulation
Wednesday, May 17th, 2017 by Joy Padgett
Do you have a multi-level attic, kitchen soffits, kneewalls, trey ceilings and/or trusses in your house? If you so, chances are, the insulation that was installed wasn’t installed properly and wasn’t the best insulation for your house….or you.
Because it is relatively inexpensive, most homes have fiberglass batt insulation in certain areas. However, largely installed improperly, this type of insulation isn’t yielding the maximum benefit. In some cases, the insulation that should be in these areas is actually missing….completely.
So, how do you know if your insulation is living up to its potential? How do you know if certain areas in your home are actually without insulation? The professionals at Weatherization Plus can help!
With our knowledge and specific equipment, we can determine whether or not your insulation was installed properly, is missing completely or has been compromised.
We have been in many homes where the batt insulation has been installed incorrectly. This means it isn’t doing its job! Batt insulation cannot be compressed to fit into a cavity and the paper side has to be facing in a certain direction depending on where the insulation is being installed. Moreover, the insulation cannot be wet, hanging down or completely missing either.
Vaulted ceilings are a wonderful way to open up a room, but, if the batt insulation wasn’t properly installed, it can slide down so that the top of your vault has no insulation in it whatsoever. This translates into a large, but uncomfortable room, often described to us by our customers as cold.
Because most of the homes we go into weren’t air sealed before the batt insulation was installed, we see evidence of air-washing on the batt insulation. Air-washing occurs when air is allowed to pass through the batt insulation due to gaps and cracks in the subfloors (for example) leaving behind traces of dust, allergens and other airborne particles. If you, or someone in your home suffers from dust allergies, your batt insulation could be contributing to their suffering.
Your house probably has some batt insulation in it. Have you had it checked recently?
